Dental veneers to improve the appearance of the smile
Dental veneers are a type of dental treatment used in patients who need to improve the aesthetic appearance of their smile. It consists of placing an acrylic cover on the tooth that imitates its appearance. For this, the tooth’s tone, brightness, size, and curvature are studied to ensure that it fits with the rest of the pieces and is as natural as possible. This aesthetic procedure can be carried out on all teeth or any dental amount, according to the needs of each patient. It usually is done in the anterior front that goes from the canine on one side to the dog on the other side, which is the part that is visible when smiling. Dental veneers can be of two types.
What types of veneers are there?
Resin or composite veneers
They are made in the dentist’s office (usually an expert in dental aesthetics) using acrylic resin or composite, the same material used to fill teeth affected by caries. Its thickness is usually 0.3-0.5 mm.
To place a composite veneer, it is necessary to prepare the face of the tooth where it will have adhered through minimal surface milling and acid etching. That guarantees the fixation of the adhesive cement and the composite. After placing the composite or acrylic material, the polishing bur will be passed over the surface to ensure the desired aesthetic quality. One or two veneers are usually placed at each dental visit. Anesthesia may be required for tooth surface preparation before veneer placement.
Porcelain or ceramic veneers
Porcelain or ceramic veneers are made in the dental laboratory from impressions or molds taken in the dental office. They look similar to a false nail and are placed on the exposed face of the tooth.
The advantage is that all the veneers can be placed in a single session and anesthesia infiltration is unnecessary. In both cases, the adhesion to the tooth is carried out through the use of a specific adhesive material that gives it stability, hardness, and resistance to wear. The results are excellent, although the price is much higher in the case of veneers made in the laboratory.
dental veneers prices
The price of resin veneers is usually lower, between 150-200 euros each. Although sometimes complete coverage of the entire exposed face is unnecessary, so the price could be lower. As for porcelain or ceramic veneers, their unit price is somewhat higher, and each veneer can cost around 600 euros.
How are they placed?
Dental veneers are placed on the visible face of the tooth through the use of a specific adhesive material that allows the cover to adhere permanently to the tooth. Before that, the tooth’s condition is analyzed to make sure it is healthy.
Suppose we are going to place several veneers. In that case, we must create a personalized design of the entire mouth, ideally with a virtual simulation that allows the patient to get an idea of the final result. In the case of placing only one veneer, the next tooth is usually taken as a reference.
