Job seekers and hiring companies
This week, I found a new survey released by FlexJobs¹ that found that 48% of unemployed job seekers are discouraged in their job search because they can’t find the right job to apply for. The survey also found that 47% are actively looking for jobs outside their current occupation, 85% are willing to take a pay cut to find work, and 40% have applied for jobs they believe are above the eligibility criteria. What is going on in today’s labor market?
I’m asking this question because I find this stat shocking. in the past few months we have faced an “Applicant shortage” and what we call “Buyer’s Market” candidates are in demand. Has the ability to negotiate a higher salary There is an opportunity to receive incentives that would normally not be received, no…?
These statistics from a job seeker’s perspective seem to give a very different picture to companies hiring in the labor market. Where is the disconnection?

However, when I think about applicant deficits and measure these statistics, One thing is clear to me: maybe it’s time to look at the deficit from a “candidate” perspective. The reason for the shortage is because job seekers can’t find the job they are looking for? It seems to me that this might be part of the case. Put yourself in the applicant’s shoes.
Who will be the perfect person for your role? if you are this person What would you like to see in the job description? What keywords is this candidate searching for? What are you offered that are not similar roles? Why would anyone want to work in this position with this company? What kind of person would be excited about this opportunity?
Also consider where this person is looking for a job. Re-evaluate whether the job posting is in the position that the right candidate is looking for. I recently visited the Smoky Mountains and stayed in a town called Gatlinburg. If you haven’t been It will be a tourist town at the entrance to the Smoky Valley. They have shops, restaurants and attractions all over the street, however, what I’ve noticed is that many companies have “Help Wanted” signs outside their buildings. We also went to a restaurant that admitted that there was not enough staff due to shortages. So the waiting time will be a bit longer. As we looked around the restaurant, many tables were empty because there were not enough waiters and waitresses. What we later learned from restaurant owners in Gatlinburg was that the city employs a large number of Romanians. Working in Gatlinburg is a great opportunity for them to work and live in the United States. I never thought Gatlinburg would attract people from Romania. But two of our waiters in the two days we were actually there. And come from Romania! This is not an example where you should start your recruiting internationally. But it is a perfect example of thinking outside the box and thinking from the perspective of a candidate. Who would have thought this was a good opportunity? Who will be excited about this feature? Where is the right position to post this job?
